Tires are where a car meets the road. A vehicle\u2019s steering, suspension and braking systems all depend on tires to perform at their best.<\/p>\n

Checking Tire Pressure<\/h2>\n

Over- or under-inflation can cause irregular tread wear, poor steering and braking response, reduced traction and even complete tire failure. Underinflated tires also create more rolling friction, requiring more energy to maintain speed and resulting in poorer fuel economy.<\/p>\n

How to Check Your Tire Pressure<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Find the tire information placard inside the driver\u2019s door or door jam. It will specify the suggested tire pressures for the tires, including the spare.<\/li>\n
  2. Remove the valve stem cap and quickly depress gauge onto the valve stem until the air stops leaking out.<\/li>\n
  3. Repeat this process on each tire.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    PRO TIP:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Keep a pressure gauge in your glove box so it\u2019s always accessible. If it is low, add air until it reaches the right pressure and screw the cap back on.<\/p>\n

    Tire Inspection for Wear and Damage<\/h2>\n

    A quick tire inspection will tell you about the condition of not only your tires, but also your steering and suspension systems.<\/p>\n

    Checking Your Tires\u2019 Wear Patterns<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Excessive outer tread wear –<\/strong> caused by under-inflation.<\/p>\n

    Excessive center tread wear –<\/strong> caused by over-inflation.<\/p>\n

    Feathering –<\/strong> usually caused by incorrect wheel alignment or worn steering parts.<\/p>\n

    Cupping –<\/strong> caused by bad shock absorbers or worn suspension and steering parts.<\/p>\n

    Tread depth –<\/strong> should be greater than 4\/32\u201d. Driving on wet or snow-covered roads will require deeper tread depth.<\/p>\n

    Check for shallow tread depth and cracking.<\/p>\n

    Check for cracking and blistering of the rubber on the side wall and between the treads. If any cracks or blisters are visible, the tire needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n

    PRO TIP:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Place a quarter upside down and face out between the treads. If you can see Washington\u2019s whole head, you should consider replacing the tire.<\/p>\n

    Tire Rotation<\/h2>\n

    Rotating tires extends their service life and helps keep tire treads wearing evenly. Rotate tires at every oil change or every six months. Different types of tires require different rotation patterns. Check your owner\u2019s manual for the advised rotation pattern.<\/p>\n
